A pacemaker is a battery-operated device that helps maintain a normal heart rhythm. It sends electrical signals that stimulate the heart to contract or pump. It is designed for people who have irregular heart beats or a very slow heart rate along with symptoms of fainting or fatigue.
Pacemakers are implanted in the hospital and the procedure takes approximately 1 hour. You are relaxed, yet awake, and will most likely spend the night. You will need to arrange for transportation home after the procedure. You may not eat or drink for 4-6 hours prior to the procedure.
A follow-up visit will need to be scheduled within 2 weeks at one of our outpatient clinics.
